Honoring Veterans, One Service Dog at a Time

For many Veterans, the transition home brings a new set of challenges. The visible signs of service may fade, but the effects of PTSD, traumatic brain injuries, and other service-related conditions can continue to impact daily life for years.

At ICAN, we're honored to stand alongside Veterans on their journey forward. Through carefully matched service dog partnerships, Veterans gain a trusted companion trained to provide support during some of life's most challenging moments. These dogs can wake their partners from nightmares, interrupt flashbacks, respond to signs of emotional distress, retrieve important items, provide balance assistance, and perform other tasks that help their handlers navigate each day with greater confidence and security.

In addition to the tasks they perform, service dogs offer something equally important: a constant presence. Whether accompanying their client to a crowded event, a medical appointment, or simply through everyday routines, these dogs provide reassurance and support that can make the world feel more accessible.

ICAN is proud to waive the service dog placement fee for qualified Veterans. Through a partnership with the VA Northern Indiana Health Care System, eligible Veterans who meet program requirements can be considered for placement with an ICAN service dog. Applicants must have an honorable discharge, meet service-connected disability criteria, and be actively engaged in mental health treatment as part of a comprehensive approach to care.

The bond between a Veteran and a service dog is built through trust, dedication, and teamwork. Time and again, we've witnessed how these partnerships help Veterans reconnect with the people and activities that matter most, creating opportunities for greater independence and engagement in everyday life.

This Veterans Day, we thank the brave men and women who have served our country. We are also grateful for the donors, volunteers, and supporters who help make these life-changing partnerships possible. Together, we are ensuring more Veterans have access to the support they deserve.

To all who have served: thank you for your sacrifice, your service, and your unwavering commitment to our nation.
