Thinking ‘Outside the Box’

For nearly 400 adults in Indianapolis and Fishers, Indiana Canine Assistant Network (ICAN) facility service dog, Max, has transformed everyday activities into opportunities for growth and independence.

Since October 2023, Max has been paired with Michelle Miller, Executive Director at Outside the Box (OTB).

OTB is a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

The organization serves individuals through a day program and also provides employment support to help clients explore jobs and receive the coaching needed to succeed.

Before joining OTB, Max received specialized training from ICAN’s incarcerated handlers.

By training a service dog to help someone else, ICAN’s incarcerated handlers are given a chance to move beyond their mistakes and learn skills needed for a successful return to the community.

Michelle said, “The incarcerated handlers took great care to teach Max skills that would help as many people as possible. It was amazing to watch their dedication and passion for Max.”

Now, Max plays an important role in teaching responsibility and independence. The participants get to enjoy Max’s presence, but also learn to walk him on a leash, brush him, and cuddle with him when they are feeling anxious or need a break.

Michelle said, “Learning how to take care of Max gives participants the confidence they need to try new and unfamiliar tasks.”

He also demonstrates good hygiene for the OTB participants. Max takes baths, gets his nails clipped, and brushes his hair, which encourages participants to do the same.

To model good habits, Max cleans up his toys at the end of the day and helps to push in chairs.

Michelle says Max’s favorite activity is playing fetch or a ring toss game. He loves to retrieve objects, and OTB participants work on their dexterity and arm strength by grasping and throwing the ball or ring.

At OTB, Max has his own set of goals, just like the participants he supports. Currently, Max is working on learning to play UNO and read cue cards. Michelle hopes to utilize him in art groups in the future so that participants can practice painting and drawing Max.

Reflecting on Max’s impact, Michelle said, “Our participants are excited and motivated to come in each day and spend time with Max. He has been life-changing for us.”
