For years, Kendall waited for something many teenagers take for granted: the freedom to do more on her own.
Kendall lives with neurofibromatosis type 1, a condition that affects the growth of nerve tissue. Along the way, she has adapted to chronic pain, medical challenges, and using a wheelchair. While she approaches life with determination, some everyday tasks require extra support, making the freedom she desired harder to achieve.
Then her family discovered something that could expand what was possible.
When Kendall was 10 years old, her mother, Stephanie, began researching service dog organizations and added her daughter to ICAN's waitlist.
Over the next several years, the family received periodic updates as ICAN searched for the right mobility service dog match.
Then the call finally came.

A yellow Labrador named Rone had been chosen to become Kendall's service dog.
"I was really excited," Kendall recalled. "I knew I would probably be more independent once I got him."
What Kendall couldn't yet know was just how much Rone would change her life.
Today, Rone is rarely more than a few steps away from her side. Whether he's helping her navigate the school day, accompanying her on family outings, or supporting her at home, Rone provides far more than practical assistance. He gives Kendall the confidence to move through the world with greater ease and peace of mind.
His impact is perhaps most noticeable at school.
"If I drop something, I don't have to rely on my aide or ask other kids for help," Kendall said. "I know he can do it for me."

For many students, picking up a dropped pencil or notebook is an afterthought. For Kendall, being able to handle those moments herself has been transformative. With Rone by her side, everyday challenges no longer have to become requests for help.
And while his tasks are important, the greatest gift Rone provides may be confidence.
Before receiving her service dog, Kendall often hesitated to ask for assistance, even when she needed it. Now she has a trusted partner she can count on every day. His presence allows her to focus less on obstacles and more on everything she wants to accomplish.
And their bond formed almost immediately.
Not long after placement, it became clear that Rone knew exactly who his person was. If Kendall left without him, he patiently waited for her return. Wherever she goes, he's close behind, attentive, devoted, and always ready to work.
For Kendall's family, Rone has brought peace of mind as well. He is trained to seek help when needed, and caring for him has encouraged Kendall to take on new responsibilities and grow her skills as a handler.

Nearly a year after being matched, Kendall doesn't hesitate when asked what Rone means to her.
"I think he's my best friend."
For Kendall, Rone is much more than a service dog. He's a partner, a source of confidence, and a constant companion. Together, they've opened new doors, turning everyday moments into opportunities to do more, explore more, and live with greater freedom.
Today, nearly 70 people are waiting for an ICAN service dog, each hoping for the same opportunities and support that Rone has brought to Kendall's life. Your gift can help provide the expert training, care, and partnership that make these life-changing matches possible. Will you help create more stories like Kendall and Rone's?
