A Tail of Redemption
Chrystal and ICAN Tara at Indiana Women’s Prison in 2023
Chrystal Sizemore's story is one of hope, second chances, and a determination to make a difference in her community. But her journey began in the most unlikely of places – a prison.
As a young adult, Chrystal fell into alcohol and drug addiction, a path that led her to a ten-year incarceration.
During her time at Indiana Women's Prison in Indianapolis, she began to make changes in her life with the hope of one day finally making a successful return to the community. Chrystal joined a ministry program, pursued a college education, and discovered the Indiana Canine Assistant Network (ICAN).
When Chrystal joined ICAN, she initially took on basic duties like cleaning. However, her role quickly evolved, allowing her to engage directly with the service dogs in training. As she developed her skills, some of her dogs successfully graduated, leading to an incredible opportunity to participate in ICAN's Team Training, where she had the privilege of working hands-on with clients receiving their service dogs. This transformative experience profoundly impacted Chrystal's life in ways she never imagined.
For the next five years, Chrystal found her passion with ICAN, learning how to train a service dog for someone in need and the power of positive reinforcement to create change in herself and others.
Today, Chrystal is a full-time behavior technician at a local recovery center in Indianapolis, where she uses her experience to guide others on their path to recovery from substance abuse and other mental health challenges.
Chrystal and her family
"I now use what I learned at ICAN with my clients," Chrystal said. "If my patients complete their group classes, I reward them. Little things like candy can help reinforce positive behavior and build confidence."
Now 12 years sober, Chrystal is focused on the future. She's working toward a bachelor's degree in human resources and cherishing time with her granddaughters. She also plans to become an ICAN volunteer and stay connected with the program that changed her life.
Chrystal and her granddaughter
"ICAN taught me that no matter who you are or where you come from, you can still make a positive impact," Chrystal reflects. "The program has given me so much love and support, which is something I've never experienced before. It truly changed my life."
