Smart Ways to Give Before 2025 Ends Maximize Your Impact — and Your Benefits — with a Gift to ICAN
As 2025 comes to a close, now is the perfect time to make a gift that empowers individuals living with disabilities through the life-changing support of ICAN service dogs — and may also offer meaningful tax advantages for you.
Recent tax law changes could affect how you give in the future. Here’s what you need to know to make the most of your charitable giving this year:
Key Tax Law Changes to Consider
New floor for itemizers (starting 2026): You’ll need to give at least 0.5% of your adjusted gross income (AGI) to claim a charitable deduction. What it means for you: Maximize your giving in 2025 before this threshold takes effect.
Reduced benefit for top earners (starting 2026): The tax benefit for every dollar deducted drops from 37 cents to 35 cents. What it means for you: If you’re in the highest tax bracket, giving more this year could mean greater savings.
SALT deduction cap increases to $40,000 (starting 2025): The cap will rise annually through 2029 before reverting to $10,000 in 2030. What it means for you: This may offer added relief for those in high-tax states and influence your overall giving strategy.
Higher standard deduction made permanent: For 2025, it’s $15,750 for single filers and $31,500 for married couples. Those 65+ may qualify for an additional deduction. What it means for you: Even if you don’t itemize, you may benefit from giving appreciated assets or IRA distributions.
Cash gift deduction limit remains at 60% of AGI: What it means for you: Consider a blended strategy using both cash and non-cash assets to maximize your impact and benefits.
Great Year-End Giving Options to Support ICAN
Make an Immediate Difference: Give online or mail a check to ICAN. Your gift may qualify for a federal income tax deduction. Note: Mailed donations must be postmarked by Dec. 31 to count for 2025.
Donate Appreciated Stock: If held for over a year, you may receive a deduction and avoid capital gains tax. Note: The gift date is when the stock enters ICAN’s account — not when you initiate the transfer.
Recommend a Grant from Your Donor-Advised Fund (DAF): Support ICAN with a one-time or recurring grant. Note: You receive a deduction when contributing to your DAF, not when recommending a grant.
Make a Gift from Your IRA: If you’re 70½ or older, you can give up to $108,000 directly from your IRA to ICAN tax-free. Note: Transfers must be completed by Dec. 31. If writing a check, it must clear by year-end.
